The trophy was presented in the Harris Hotel by Fiona (Martin) Macleod, grand-niece of the late Neil Martin and life-long friend of Joyce. There was a large attendance of relatives and friends at the annual auspicious occasion.

The worthy winner of the Neil Martin Honour trophy for 2012 is Joyce Macdonald, daughter of John Archie and Annie Macdonald, 3 Kyles, Scalpay, Harris.

The trophy is awarded to a member of the Harris community who has brought distinction to the area.

On leaving Tarbert School Joyce trained as a nurse in Glasgow, graduating in 2008, and now works in the Oncology Unit in the Beatson Hospital.

At her own expense she travelled to Pakistan where she worked in a school unit and had responsibility for disadvantaged children.

She has been similarly involved in Uganda, where she has been personally sponsoring a young child for several years and now has another child benefiting from her dedication and generosity.

On her free Saturdays in Glasgow she volunteers to work in a Youth Café raising funds for Church and Youth Clubs. She takes frequent responsibility for children in the Beatson Clinic outside her own ward, taking them to outside entertainment including Pantomimes.

She has in the past also addressed pupils of Sir E Scott School about the work she undertakes and also about her college and university experience.

“A truly compassionate and caring person who devotes her life to improving the lives of less fortunate people.”
