A PHENOMENAL £1,120 was raised by members and patrons of Stornoway's Royal British Legion as the island branch lead the way when Legion branches throughout Scotland got behind Erskine Week, which ran from 1-8 June.
Speaking of the generosity of customers, Stornoway Royal British Legion Branch Manager, Murdo Macleod, said: "We are absolutely delighted with the total and really would like to say a huge thanks to all our members and guest who have supported the cause."
Last year's inaugural Erskine Week raised a total of £109,000 nationally – valuable funds used to help provide first-class nursing and medical care to ex-Service men and women in the five Erskine homes.
And this year in a bid to raise more, branches throughout Scotland supported Erskine Week by setting their very own Erskine Challenge.
The Stornoway Royal British Legion branch came up with the novel idea of collecting as many £2 coins as possible and in just a matter of weeks, by April they had already gathered 282 coins – resulting in an impressive £564.
Displayed line-up along the bar, the £2 continued to roll in and by Monday June 8, the final day of Erskine Week, the grand total of £1,120 was counted and announced.
