A TOTAL of 92% of people surveyed by An Comunn Gaidhealach in an evaluation said they were 'very satisfied' with Oban as the host venue for the Royal National Mod.
The evaluation confirms that the 2009 Mod was one of the most successful Mods ever held by An Comunn.
Satisfaction rates were consistently high with 92% of those surveyed saying they were very satisfied with Oban as the host venue for the Mod. In addition, 89% of those surveyed confirmed they had travelled to Oban for the Mod and would be staying in the host town during the event. The Mod fringe was rated good or excellent by 97% of those surveyed whilst an encouraging 51% stated that they would definitely return to Oban for a future holiday.
Over three quarters of those surveyed felt that the Mod enhanced the status of the Gaelic language 'a great deal'.
A total of 67% of respondents were fluent Gaelic speakers, the remainder being learners or having an interest in the language and/or culture. This latter segment is seen as key to Gaelic language development in future years.
The headline impacts highlighted in the evaluation are:
* Over 8,500 visitors to Oban during the Mod;
* Approximately £2.3 million of expenditure in the Oban locality during the Mod;
* Overnight visitors spending approximately £284.30 per person;
* Day visitors spending approximately £30.55 per person
* Public sector return on investment (ROI) of £14 for every £1 invested;
* 80.6 equivalent Net New FTE jobs created as a result of the event;
* Welcomed by the host community and local industry;
* Wide-ranging national and international press coverage of the event.
An Comunn Gaidhealach have expressed satisfaction with the results.
Chief Executive, John Morrison said: "We are delighted with the results of the evaluation. They show that the 2009 Mod was a resounding success and of great benefit to the Oban economy. The Gaelic language is a strong economic lever. In the midst of a severe recession this performance is hugely impressive.
"We are indebted to everyone who helped us stage what was undoubtedly one of the most successful National Mods ever held. We have noted all the feedback that we have received and we will consolidate and build upon the positive feedback. We will also learn from any other feedback that is received.
"All the comments that have been received are welcomed and we will use them to build a stronger Mod which will ultimately support a stronger language and culture," said Mr Morrison.
The AGM of An Comunn Gaidhealach will take place at Bun-sgoil Ghàidhlig Inbhir Nis on Friday, February 19 at 7.30pm.
