ASIDE FROM a solitary Autumn Cup won in 1990 - which many would argue doesn't count - it is a staggering forty nine years since players or supporters of Carloway last sampled the sweet taste of football silverware.
Discounting the Autumn Cup, their last honour arrived in the form of the Stornoway Cup of 1957. The fifties proved to be something of a golden spell for Carloway who enjoyed happy hunting in this decade.
Perhaps the best season in their history arrived in the double winning season of 1956 when they picked up both the Doyle Carte Cup and the Tormod Mor Tankard.
Around the same period they also contested three Eilean an Fhraoich Cup finals in a row but since then the club have found themselves on hard times but they often recall what most observers acknowledge to be the greatest side in the history of the club.
Part of this famous Cup Winning Carloway side was Iain 'Tiger' Macarthur who enjoyed a near 20 year association with the team.
"I left school in March at the age of 15 and by April I was playing for Carloway. At that time they were the only side on the West Side as there was no Ness team or West Side team," revealed Tiger.
Only a year previously Carloway had lifted the Stornoway Cup so 'tiger' was joining a well established side and his first season went well.
'Tiger' explained: "We had a very good team and in my first season we won the Doyle Carte and the Tormod Mor Tankard. I began playing at outside right but I really played everywhere for the team. All across the forward line and also at half-back, I was shifted around a lot.
"At that time I feel that Back were the best team. They were very strong and always used to beat us. It was very seldom that we would get one over on them."
In addition to their double winning heroics of 1955, Carloway also appeared in three Eilean an Fhraoich Cup Finals in a row: 1955; 56 and 57. Carloway have only appeared in the final once since but have yet to add their name to the oldest and most famous of all the football trophies in Western Isles football.
In the 1957 final Carloway met a Ness side who weren't in the league. Spearheading the Niseach's attack was DM 'Midas' Campbell. A top player whose talents were well known to most of the Carloway side as 'Midas' had lined up for Carloway in the 1955 final and had also played in the School League winning side with a number of the Carloway side. Ironically, 'Midas' scored against his former club in a 3 – 1 win.
'Tiger' said: "We were heavily beaten by Ness in the 1957 final and they didn't even have a team in the league. They were a very good team though.
"Aths and United were also very good sides when I was playing. Guys like Alec Allison, Raleigh, Geordie Macarthur and the goalkeeper Flavell. United were a very good team and in 'Roddyshan' Macleod they had one of the hardest men I ever saw in football.
"One of the best things about the football was the social side. The fixtures would regularly be on a Friday so we could have a dance after the match. We would have three buses leaving Carloway and the West Side going to away games and after the match we would have tea, sandwiches and a dance."
Being in the thick of Lewis football for almost two decades 'Tiger' has seen some of the greatest names in isles football history but for him there will always be one man who stands above the rest.
He said: "John Murdo 'Stoodie' Mackay was such a gentleman and a real brilliant footballer. I would say he was the top man and as good as I have ever seen."
As well as starring for Carloway, 'Tiger' also went on to play for Shawbost and he spent a few seasons with them while they were in the league
There were quite a few of his old team mates from Carloway with 'Tiger' in the Shawbost team.
"I also played for the Lewis Select once. I think it was a Highland League Select we played and there were some brilliant players in the Select then. John Murdo Macleod (Back), Kenny 'Bobbans' (Aths), John Robertson (Aths) and Rob Macleod (Lochs)."
In addition to this appearance with the senior Select, 'Tiger' was also part of an under 14 Schoolboys Select who played an Easter Ross Select in 1952.
The island Schoolboys Select emerged triumphant after a 2 – 0 win with George Macarthur and Peter Mackay both of School scoring the goals.
The team was A Macleod (School), A Maclean (Shawbost), J Macritchie (School), JM Murray (School), PJ Mackay (School), AM Macleod (School), MJ Macphail (Shawbost), G Macarthur (School), NJ Graham (Aird), I Hardie (School) Iain 'Tiger' Macarthur (Shawbost).
Surprisingly, after a long and successful time in Lewis football, 'Tiger' hasn't watched a local football match since retiring.
He added: "I don't know why but I haven't watched any at all. Not even one game since I stopped playing myself."
