Even though the practice has to make the best of what space and facilities are available to them, the vets and staff more than make up for it in their genuine caring and friendly attitude and they go out of their way to help. The other thing that pleasantly surprised me (having had many vet bills over the years at mainland) was the low prices of treatment, medication and even pet products; it is nice to see a vet practice who cares more about the animal welfare than making money!!

I had the pleasure of dealing with Hector Low himself during a very upsetting time of having to put down a lovely dog and I cannot thank him enough, his years of practice have in no way reduced the amount of genuine love and care for the animals or his soothing manner to both pet and owner. Although very sad, this was the best "vet experience" I've had in all the years of having a whole ZOO of animals. A big thank you to all at Hector Low Vets!

PS: As for the practice being a bit small, in the next couple of months they're opening a whole new, purpose-built surgery with X-ray, ultrasound,  Intensive Care Unit, kennels and all the other modern vet facilities, so now the facilities will match the high standard of care that is already in place! :-)

Hector’s practice might be basic but he has a wonderful attitude towards the animals very compassionate , extremely knowledgeable and I would not want to take my dogs anywhere else, I have been for nearly 6 years now and have had reason to see the local vets several times and have no complaints.

Is this the same Hector Nicol that refused to neuter my dog at 7 months although or previous dog was done at this age .. And then told my wife that if she took the dog to the mainland for neutering he would not attend to my dog for any vetinary requirements !!!! … TOUCH OF BLACKMAIL, I THINK … after all he is THE vet for the island..

The place stinks, its dirty and has totally inadiquate facilities…. If this place was on the mainland it would be shut down ….Maybe Kim & Aggie could give them some tips ..

This practice would not survive on the mainland! The practice is cramped and filthy, and the hygiene standards are very suspect. No x-ray facilities in this era is not acceptable. Staff dogs roam around behind reception.
Because it has a monopoly it appears it can get away with these facilities. Would only use in an emergency, any other visits I would take to the mainland!

Great vet's practice. Who needs comfy chairs in the waiting room or high-tec equipment when we have hands on vets who give A1 treatment and care plus excellent advice and help over the telephone - I should know having many domestic pets and livestock so Hector's number is firmly embedded in my memory. Great support staff in the practice aswell. Parking can be an issue as thougtless people not using the surgery will still park in the few available spaces.
MY GRATEFUL PETS WOULD BACK ME UP ON THIS IF THEY COULD TYPE!

Just moved to Stornoway from Manchester so I'm used to very clinical vets.

The waiting room is very Spartan and functional, it's more "All Creatures Great and Small" than "Holby City", there may be bits all over the place but the examination room is sterile.

I've seen two of the vets at the practice and I'm happy with both.

Hector, being a superhero, does have x-ray eyes and has no need for man made machinery.

Hector Low has the only vets practice on the island but we are long overdue for another one to open. Yes the vets are great and know what they are doing but with no x-ray machine available it is always worrying what would happen should your pet break their leg.

It’s long overdue a make over and a good clean. I sometimes feel it’s not as clean as it should be! But as there is nowhere else to go you really don’t have much of a choice!

Finding parking outside the vets can also be a nightmare as people selfishly leave their unused cars they are trying to sell in the spaces across the road from it so you usually have to park far away from the vets which if you have a big dog can be a nightmare!
