The recent demise of Somerfield has left the Co-op trying to fill the gap as the only supermarket in town.
Whilst I'm sure they are trying hard, it quickly became fairly obvious that they were going to struggle to cope with the demands of customers looking for fresh produce.
A recent consultation exercise involving our public bodies on the effects of a p
andemic outbreak on the Island came to the conclusion that one of the biggest problems we would face, even with two supermarkets, would be the lack of fresh produce, which would run out within two days.
Is it not time that we as consumers should begin to question the way that we have become so reliant on mainland based companies to supply the staple foods, easily provided locally, that we require?
Often this imported produce is pre-packed and at the end of a very long supply chain with the unavoidable high usage of chemicals and packaging.
Lewis and Harris Horticultural Producers (LHHP) begin their Market season this Saturday in Point Street from 8.30am till 1.00pm, and once more hope to increase the amount of fresh fruit and produce available, for resale and home consumption, within Lewis and Harris. Market details can be found at www.stornowayfarmersmarket.co.uk
Last year, LHHP members grew over 85K of fresh produce, yet this is probably only 1% of the retail value of fresh fruit and produce within Lewis and Harris.
It is no coincidence that the first aisles in any supermarket are taking up with fruit and veg.
The markets in Stornoway and Tarbert allow consumers to have real choices in the type of food they purchase. The environmental, social, economic and health benefits of local produce are well documented.
LHHP are not looking to conquer the fresh produce market in Lewis and Harris but rather to try and redress the balance a little whilst providing diversification within crofting, fostering community spirit and a quality local product at a reasonable price.

i hope someone is going to offer fresh produce soon as the co-op definitely cannot cope with the increased demand, in fact last week they had on display lettuce that were not fit for human consumption. i would have put them in a recycling box.
