Well, there you have it: a resounding and definite 'No' to the proposed windfarms. Not even a debate regarding a possible reduced scale. A simple 'No'!
Yes, an acceptance of the fact that many were against the second plan produced by Lewis Wind Power, but why were there no other alternatives considered?
In the weeks that see our community trying to come to terms with falling school roles, the possi
ble closure of what we thought were central government supported and financed schools, a doubling of fuel costs, and the threat of possible rationing of fuel, as a lifelong supporter of the SNP this is a bitter pill to swallow. To the business community in our community please 'hold the line' as we know how difficult it is to operate on these islands. To the visionary technical individuals in Lewis Wind Power do not be down hearted, to be about great things is never easy.
Yet there were no alternatives from those in opposition. Are we as an island community, supported as we are to the tune of over a million pounds per week, so removed from the realities of modern life? I think not.
To simply shelve these plans is wrong. To have nature lobbyists who are supported by my taxes have the final say in what can be developed on these islands is wrong and appear to have more power than our feudal landlords ever had.
To the visionary individuals who lifted the Arnish project and hoped for great things, you did your best for the overall good of our community yet my belief remains that the huge amount of subsidies that keep these islands in some cushioned privileged position will not always be so readily available. Then what?
