A book about the life of Chris Murray from Stornoway, a winchman on Search and Rescue helicopters for 22 years, was launched in the An Lanntair Arts Centre Stornoway

this evening (Friday, May 31st).

Chris, who won a Queen’s Gallantry medal for the rescue of the crewmen from the fishing vessel The Hansa, has been involved in the rescue of many people from the seas and

mountains around the north of Scotland and further afield.

His book titled: Winchman follows his exploits from his early days as a Royal Navy diver in the elite Faslane diving team, disabling explosive devices, and goes on

to tell of his life as a civilian diver working offshore for various companies, before detailing his 22 years as the winchman on a Sikorsky S61.

The book was co-written by Chris and local journalist Iain Maciver, the ‘Winchman’ is priced £11.99 and is available from An Lanntair, the Baltic Bookshop and the Woodlands Centre in Stornoway, and at Waterstones in Inverness.
