PROISEACT nan Ealan (The Gaelic Arts Agency) are delighted to announce that Benbecula will be the next and final area to host the Na Mo Chuid Aodaich fashion show project.
Presented in partnership with Sgioba Drama Uibhist and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, the award winning venture is set to take place in the Balivanich Hall on Saturday, March 23rd.
Na Mo Chuid Aodaich is a celebration of the clothes and history of local communities, incorporating a catwalk show, drama and music, and promises to engage and enthral all those involved both in a participatory and audience capacity.
Highly successful community shows have been run in five Western Isles communities, Glasgow, Skye and Inverness, and is moulded to fit each community in takes place in. Thus in mind, the Benbecula show will feature a dramatisation of local history as scripted by the successful Uist Drama Team (Sgioba Drama Uibhist) who are working with established writer Morag Stewart of Grimsay, North Uist.
Proiseact nan Ealan together with Sgioba Drama are appealing for loaned contributions of vintage clothing for the project.
These clothes, often lying forgotten in the homes of the local community, will be the stars of the show. The stories behind each garment will be told as the clothes, modelled by local people, are given a breath of life on the catwalk.
Of particular interest are School uniforms (especially blazers) from Portree and Inverness Royal Academy from the 50s and 60s, mens’ and childrens’ clothes and work clothes.
The response from each community where the show has already taken place has unearthed some beautiful and unique articles of clothing from last century to the present day. The wide variety of clothes submitted shows the truly vibrant styles worn by islanders throughout the iconic fashion movements of the 20th century.
All money raised, by donations to this project, will be going to the local branch of the RNLI and the Heart Failure Nurse Service (Western Isles).
