Awful jokes raise serious amount of money for charity

THEY’VE reached as far a field as Australia, Texas, Singapore and Shanghai and have raised an amazing £6,000 for four Western Isles charities – who would have thought ‘Donnie Maroot’s Awful Joke Book’ would prove so popular!

Thoroughly pleased with the success of the fundraising initiative, Lewisman Donnie Macleod, who now lives in Glasgow, said: “The support was amazing and the feedback wasn’t as bad as it deserved to be!”

And thanks to Donnie’s Awful Jokes – ‘Which Muppet keeps himself to himself? Hermit the Frog! - four island charities have welcomed donations with the proceeds split between the Bethesda Care Home in Stornoway, Harris House in Tarbert, Tagsa Uibhist in Balivanich and Cobhair Bharraigh in Castlebay.

And don’t fear – you haven’t missed out on a chuckle (or groan) as copies of the Awful Joke Book are still available to buy from the Bethesda shop and from Tagsa Uibhist or by contacting Donnie directly at donniemaroot@hotmail.co.uk

Donnie continued: “There were a few people in particular I’d like to thank: Alina Simpson, Dondy Maclean and Donald Sweeny Macsween, who sold loads of copies, and Marion Morrison from Barclays Bank who arranged pound for pound charity matching.

“Next step? I’m hoping to produce another jokebook in time for Christmas 2013 – apologies in advance!” he added.
