THE best Indian food in Scotland officially is not in Glasgow or Edinburgh but in Biggar!

The team at the Taj Mahal in the town’s High Street followed up a win at the recent Scottish Curry Awards by picking up the title of Best Indian Cuisine at the Scottish Entertainment Awards ceremony in Glasgow.

The Taj beat off stiff competition from bigger and more established curry houses in Scotland’s two biggest cities proving that Glasgow and Edinburgh may be big but Biggar is indeed better!

Owner Abby Ullah couldn’t hide his delight when the Gazette caught up with him this week.

He said: “It was unbelievable. We had some really nice comments from people there on the night.

“It just shows that we can compete against the bigger restaurants and more than hold our own.

“We are up there on merit and it’s a great boost to all the staff and our customers as well.”

Abby revealed that the award was sealed after a number of mystery judges turned up at the restaurant unannounced, only revealing who they were after their meal.

“We were told that the judges would be coming in,” said Abby.

“However, they didn’t tell us when so it certainly kept us on our toes!

“It was only when we asked them for the bill and they told us who they were that we realised what was going on.

“They were obviously impressed with our menu and the food.”
