It’s the time to keep an eye out for dolphins while crossing the Minch as the Summer Queen, sailing from Ullapool, encountered a small pod of common dolphins at The Summer Isles this week.

The pod of around 15 adults appeared to be a scouting party looking for food for a larger pod possibly further out to sea.

The dolphins approached the Summer Queen and spent around 10 minutes ‘bow riding’ – a form of surfing at the front of the boat – before going back to their search for fish.

Pods around The Summer Isles can reach into the hundreds through the summer months, so scouting groups are always on the look for adequate food sources to sustain the larger groups.
