IT was a case of one small splash, one big tidal wave in Gaelic presenter Niall Iain MacDonald’s bid to row solo across the Atlantic – from New York to Stornoway, NY2SY – as on Friday (July1), his boat entered island waters for the first time!
Commenting on the occasion, Niall Iain said: “It’s a great feeling to finally see the boat on the waves after the disappointment of the postponement. A lot of work has gone into this moment and there is still plenty to do before I am ready to set off from New York next year.”
He continued: “Having the boat here is a great boost to the project and will help my training, and also the overall promotion of NY2SY.
“I’ll be spending as much time as possible in the boat over the coming months so people should keep an eye out for me and feel free to come and say hello. It’s a unique project and I am really hoping that the local community will get involved in NY2SY in whatever way they can.
“I am actively seeking sponsorship from companies to fund the row, and ultimately raise £100,000 for the Scottish Association for Mental Health, but I am also willing to do talks and displays to any interested groups or clubs, it’s not all about just taking.”
Niall Iain added: “Stornoway is my home and I will be rowing back here – that is what will drive me on.”
