The top prize for the week will be presented to the best dressed participant on the Clan Walk on July 13, who will win a made-to-measure kilt worth £600 (tartan of choice), very kindly donated by Celtic Clothing in Bayhead.
Other prizes include a ’Get Active’ Wii Fit game, donated by Tech Mobile; garden items from the Home Improvement Centre, a £20 voucher from WJ MacDonald (butcher), a promotional gift from Charles Macleod (butcher), a voucher for free admission for two children from Adventure Island, a map case and compass from Engebrets and a pair of wellingtons from The Crofters (specifically for the Wellie Walk on July 11).
Paths for Health Coordinator Chris Ryan explained: “The walks have been organised to promote the health benefits of walking and encourage independent walking. This year’s walks are themed, to encourage attendance and so that participants have a fun time. Participants of all ages are welcome.”
Wednesday July 11 ‘Welly Walk’
A walk through the Stornoway Castle Grounds starting and finishing at the Woodlands Centre. The walk begins at 11am and walkers are encouraged to wear wellies. Prizes will be given out to the best three examples of decorated or unusual wellies.
Thursday July 12 ‘Nature Walk’
A walk through the Castle Grounds with interpretation and information being given by Dr Eddie Graham from Lews Castle College, on the effects of climate and climate change on the plants and animals living within the grounds. Again, the start of this walk will be at 11am at the Woodlands Centre and walkers will be encouraged to take part in a fun quiz with prizes.
Friday July 13 ‘Clan Walk’
A walk through the Castle Grounds with walkers being encouraged to wear some item of clothing that will identify what clan they belong to. Prizes will be given for the best costume or outfit and again this walk begins at 11am from the Woodlands Centre and will finish outside the Stornoway Castle.
Saturday July 14 ‘Walk 500 Miles’ (finale)
Activity Packs containing registration forms, pedometers, step cards, etc. have been distributed throughout the Outer Hebrides, encouraging participants to walk 500 miles or as close to this as possible. Over a 10 week period they have been using the pedometer and step cards to record how many steps they have walked. A walk beginning at the Woodland Centre at 11am and finishing in front of the Lews Castle will be the finale to this event and prizes will be given to those who have walked 500 hundred miles or have got closest to it.
Mr Ryan added: “We would really encourage members of the local community and visitors to attend one – or all – of the walks. Not only will the walks be great fun and good for your health and wellbeing, but there will be the opportunity to win some fantastic prizes, kindly donated by local shops and businesses. So why not get into the festival spirit, don your walking shoes and take the opportunity to breath in the fresh air and enjoy the scenery? And don’t forget to tell your friends!”
