IN preparation for his mammoth challenge of rowing the Atlantic solo from New York to Stornoway – NY2SY – Niall Iain MacDonald has called in the experts to help refit his ocean-going rowing boat.

Said Niall Iain: “The refit is being overseen by Leven Brown from the Borders, one of the most experienced ocean rowers in the world. In 2010, Leven skippered a four man crew who rowed from New York to the Scilly Isles in just 43 days, breaking the 114 year old record for the fastest crossing of the North Atlantic.

“We have set up a workshop at the WITPG Museum at Marybank and I’m really happy that I have been able to have the refit work done in Stornoway.”

He added: “It’s a big step forward for NY2SY, though there is still plenty of training and fundraising to do.” And there is still a chance for local companies and businesses to get involved in the project through sponsorship – more details can be found at www.ny2sy.co.uk.

Niall Iain is completing the challenge to raise £100,000 for charity SAMH (Scottish Association for Mental Health) and anticipates setting off from New York in May of this year.

SAMH believe there is no health without mental health and campaign on behalf of people with mental health problems.
