South Uist ‘time capsule’
South Uist is once again the site of important archaeological discoveries. Experts have found a series of preserved ancient settlements dating back from the Bronze age on the island.
The settlements have caused researchers to question their view that Scandinavian invaders enslaved women and children and killed men. Instead the discoveries show that the invaders lived on the island with a greater degree of intermixing than previously thought.
The discoveries are being described as a ‘time capsule’ and are hoped to lead to a further understanding of the island’s history.
The settlement where uncovered during a major project undertaken with grant aid from Historic Scotland.
