Maggie Cunningham, chairperson of MG ALBA, which operates BBC ALBA in partnership with the BBC, welcomed the additional investment in the channel announced today as part of the Government Spending Review.
She said: “We warmly welcome this further commitment to indigenous language broadcasting and to BBC ALBA – which has been a success since its launch five years ago.
“We are grateful for the Chief Secretary to the Treasury for his part in offering us this additional support and also grateful for the continuing commitment from the Scottish and UK Governments to developing the channel and the support we receive across the political spectrum. We are conscious of the danger of audience fatigue driven by a high repeat ratio on the channel. Current budgets have made it difficult to develop key genre, including drama, comedy, or original animations for children, which are core to our strategy for building on the success to date of the channel.”
