A HIGHLAND adventurer set to row from New York to Stornoway is urging local and national businesses to support him with the final £20,000 required to reach his goal.

Stornoway-based Niall Iain Macdonald, 38, is planning to undertake this incredible challenge alone in May 2013 to support the Scottish Association of Mental Health (SAMH).

He will row over 3,400 miles in one of the most dangerous and unpredictable bodies of water in the world.

The challenge was originally planned for May this year (2012), however Niall Iain had no choice but to postpone it due to lack of funding.

With a fresh sponsorship strategy, branded merchandise on sale as well as entering a high-profile competition to secure funds, he is confident May 2013 will be the date of his departure.

He said: “I was completely devastated to have had to postpone my trip earlier this year. Despite the incredible support I received, raising over £38,000 in sponsorship, I was still short of the total needed to pay for the project.

“Considering how challenging this row will be it’s essential I am 100% ready and prepared before embarking on it.

“I now have fresh sponsorship options in place, a new strategy and am hopeful I can complete these last stages of funding, so I can stay on track to raise over £100,000 for SAMH.”

Niall Iain is offering a platinum title sponsorship option of £10,000 and a Gold Sponsorship option at £7,500.

Sponsors who have already backed NY2SY include: Genesis Oil & Gas; rock band Runrig; Weber Shandwick; Seafield Navigation; Sands Caravan & Camping; CNR International; Macdonald & Co; Rock The Boat Consulting; Blackhouse Creative; Vital Signs and the Samaritans.

Julie Macdonald, community fundraising manager at SAMH, said: “We are extremely grateful to Niall Iain for his continued support of SAMH.

“The challenge he is undertaking is incredible and the money he is raising will truly make a difference to Scotland’s mental health.”

Niall Iain has also entered a contest to win a scholarship from adventure company Kukri Events.

The Kukri team have set up an initiative offering up to £20,000 to help adventurers get to their start line. He is counting on Facebook likes and votes to ensure he is the winner.
