Something for everyone is what’s on offer at the last Awards for All funded an Lanntair dance events with a weekend of Salsa and Samba to enjoy.

Island dancers may remember Salsa North’s Jermaine McCracken from previous salsa events – and she returns to Lewis (June 6th to 8th), to teach her easy to learn sultry moves and hip swings.

The shimmying kicks off with a Beginners Salsa class on Thursday evening (June 6th) at 7.30pm at Stornoway Golf Club.

Friday, June 7th, then sees a Salsa Siesta take place at the Golf Club (2-4pm), as An Lanntair Dance Development Officer Kirstie Anderson explained: “It’s our first Over 50s event and offers an afternoon of dancing and refreshments, including partner work and also dancing that everyone can join in with.”

She continued: “Then on Friday evening we’ve got a Salsa Social, again at the Golf Club, and everyone is invited to come along and learn some steps in a social and fun environment.”

And onto Saturday, June 8th, and the morning is jam-packed with a programme of beginners salsa and samba classes.

“We have the beautiful Jasmine dos Santos, a traditional samba dancer who lives in Glasgow, and she’ll be putting folks through their paces,” expanded Kirstie.

“Samba is a fast moving, hip shaking Brazilian dance form done without a partner. It’s a great workout and particularly effective for defining the waist – but more than anything it’s great fun when tried with loud and addictive Samba drums!”
She added: “This is a first for Lewis and absolutely no experience is necessary, complete beginners really are welcome.”

And check out around Stornoway town on the Saturday afternoon as the Salsa continues in the streets with a Latin Street Party (2-4pm, outside An Lanntair) where you can catch Jasmine in her full Samba gear, as well as watch salsa dancers and join in with mini-lessons.

“It’s a great fun event for all the family and we hope to see many people turning up and taking part,” said Kirstie.
