THE Scottish Basketmakers Circle enjoyed a trip to Lewis as participant’s travelled to Lionel, Ness, for their Autumn Gathering, October 18th to 20th.

Taking place on the island for the first time and organised by local basketmaker Dawn Susan, courses at the event included Hebridean Creel Making taught by Dawn, who learnt the craft from Donald Macarthur of Shawbost; Exploring Heather taken by Caroline Dear from Skye, and Basketry Fundamentals taught by Lise Bech from Ayrshire which saw participants review and refresh their knowledge of the basics of willow basketry.

Speaking of the Lewis Gathering success, Dawn said: “The Gathering went very well and we had such lovely weather.

“The participants on the Heather course went out for their field trip collecting heather in North dell and had a great time.

“Annie Macsween from the Ness Historical Society brought us in some original heather rope from the turn of the century, that was much appreciated.”
And of the above photograph she added: “Here are four of my pupils with their creels on their backs – wonder when the last time was that anyone saw four women with creels on their backs!”
