ON August 25, Stornoway Bridge Club ended its summer Bridge season by paying a simultaneous pairs competition with Clubs from Ayrshire, Bute and – for the first time – the Isle of Man, in the Atlantic Bridge Competition.
We played 28 boards and as each club played the boards on different dates, the results took a wee while to sort out.
The holders, Rita MacDonald and Janet Smith, were keen to repeat their success of last year, but alas, it wasn’t to be. The four tables from Stornoway produced some fine scores however, and the results of the Stornoway leg were: 1st – Ken MacDonald and Dave Gormley; 2nd – Gerda Graauwmans and Jenny Morrison; 3rd – Mike Norman and Alex Blair.
There followed a week of eager anticipation as the results from the other clubs were received and processed.
Finally, the results were in and topping first place were Sandy Anderson and Stuart Duguid from Ayrshire. In second place were island team Ken MacDonald and Dave Gormely – who were kept off the top spot by less than one per cent! - and in third place were Moira Gibbs and Ellen Eccles from Bute.
The first over the finish line from the Isle of Man were Erika Slatcher and Diccen Sargent who came in seventh.
Well done to everyone for a superbly fought contest and thanks to Stewart MacDonald for setting the boards and to Murdo Kennedy for making it all happen.
