The Proof is in the Pudding

CHARLES Macleod Butchers of Stornoway have been awarded a £40,000 plus annual contract for supply of black puddings to Crerar Hotels.

Crerar Hotels have always used Stornoway black pudding but this is the first time that a specifically named pudding maker has been awarded sole supply status.

“I can only say Stornoway makes great black puddings but Charlie`s puddings are the very best of the best and more importantly that’s what our customers tell us,” said Paddy Crerar, CEO.

“However its no picnic doing the taste test. It’s great to start but jings, after several mornings of pudding, returning to plain cornflakes is a real let down.

“It’s great stuff but like fine wine or a good malt its probably best appreciated in moderation and as part of a balanced breakfast, preferably with good crispy Scottish bacon and lovely poached eggs, maybe a mushroom or two as well!”

Paddy Crerar has also voiced his support to the Stornoway Black Pudding Producers Association for reaching the final stages of their application for Protected Geographical Indicator status (PGI) by the European Union.

He commented: “I give my full support to the Stornoway Black Pudding Producers’ Association bid for PGI status, this unique Scottish food has to be recognised in this way.

“For years our food and drink industry has been underestimated, we have wonderful produce in Scotland made in purely natural and traditional methods – it should make us all proud.”

Crerar Hotels have also newly branched into heritage beef; and Crerar Hotels Home Farm is developing a 100-strong herd of Luing and Highland Cattle which they feature as much as practical on the menus in Crerar Hotels.

Added Mr Crerar: “We have been building our Luing and Highland Cattle herd for a few years now and along with a recent record bull sale, the herds are going from strength to strength and we are delighted.

“The sole reason for all of this, is the same reason why we choose Charles Macleod of Stornoway – simply only the best will do.”

And Iain Macleod of Charles Macleod Butchers, said: “Charles Macleod are delighted to have been awarded sole supply status to Crerar Hotels.

“It’s a privilege to work with such a well known and established name in the hospitality industry, and one which shares our own vision and approach to setting, attaining and delivering the highest standards of quality and service to the Scottish market place.”

Crerar Hotels is a privately owned Scottish based company with eight hotels and two Inns in Scotland and one resort hotel in Yorkshire.

Every hotel shares common approach to food and service style but each has an independence focus to delivering for their particular market.
