Two concerts in an exciting inter-island tour will be held in Uist on Thursday and Friday June 9 and 10.
Mike Vass (fiddle), Calum MacCrimmon (pipes) and Innes Watson (guitar) are three outstanding musicians and teachers, collectively involved with several Scottish bands including Malinky, Breabach, Man’s Ruin, Boreas, the Hamish Napier Quintet and the Treacherous Orchestra.
They are also popular instrumental tutors with Feisean nan Gaidheal, the Border Gaitherin’, the Lochgoilhead Fiddle Workshop and others. Their Scottish Islands ‘Unst2Arran’ tour will run from June 7 to 16.
School workshops will be a big part of the tour, and through them the islands of Yell, Berneray, North Uist, Grimsay and Eriskay will be included in the list of islands where gigs will take place – Unst, Benbecula, South Uist, Colonsay and Arran.
“‘This will be really good,” says Padruig Morrison, young musician from Grimsay. “Great tutors! I’ve been to feisean with them all and they’re excellent.”
Padruig is a member of Còmhlan Fèis Tir a’ Mhurain, a successful young group from Uist who will be playing support on the June 9 gig at Nunton at 7.30 p.m. The young group will also be playing in An Lanntair as part of HebCelt.
The tour will also offer other young people performance practice with touring musicians, and aim to raise their awareness about how to make a living as a musician. Music and islands are two magic holiday ingredients and there is a lot of experience to learn from which differs from island to island.
To help share this, a tour blog has been set up which will record progress and encourage interest and communication between Scottish Islands, http://unst2arran.wordpress.com/.
The tour is being funded by Scotland’s Islands and organised by Music4Uist. The second concert will be in Stoneybridge Hall, South Uist at 7.30 p.m. Entry will be by donation at the door on the nights.
