ON St Patrick's Day the Uist Pipe Band took part in a parade in Galway, Ireland.
The experience proved an unforgettable one for the Isles' musicians.
Over 50 groups and organisations marched in procession from a starting point two miles outside the centre of Galway. The Pipe Band played the entire length of the route, stopping only occasionally for a breather.
Despite atrocious weather, an estimated crowd of 50,000 lined the route, all cheering loudly and waving banners.
At the end of the parade the Pipe Band went on to play at a second procession in the town of Oranmore and once again the crowds lined the streets.
Afterwards the Pipe Band were taken for a meal at the local hotel and were all presented with mementoes of the Oranmore Parade.
That evening the Galway pubs rang with the sound of the pipes as individual band members enthusiastically joined the locals in their celebrations.
A ceilidh dance organised for the occasion brought together a diverse range of musical styles with the Irish, Breton and Scottish music to the fore.
Band members James MacKenzie (Small Pipes) and Iain MacGillivary (Bodhran) gave an excellent selection of Scottish tunes – and a lively strip the willow.
A visit to Aros Nan Gaeil, a club for Irish Gaelic speakers highlighted the similarities between Irish and Scots Gaelic.
Attempts at conversation were not altogether unsuccessful and this served to bring home to many the common bonds between the two cultures.
All members of the group voted the trip an outstanding success and are grateful to Iomairt Chaluim Chille for making it all possible.
Returning to Glasgow, the Pipe Band played for a lively audience in the Park Bar.
Special thanks go to Caroline Conlon (Galway) and Sheila Byrnes (Oranmore) whose hard work ensured the trip was a success.
The hospitality and kindness shown by all in Ireland is much appreciated.
The Uist Pipe Band would like to thank Nina and the staff at The Park Bar for their very generous donation of £400 and all who supported in any way.
