CHURCHES in Scotland have been asked to pray for all those affected by the earthquake - measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale - which hit the south-western Province of Sichuan, one of China's most densely populated Provinces, this week.
The call has come from Rev Colin Renwick, convener of the World Mission Council.

The Amity Foundation - a Chinese, Christian initiated, NGO based in Nanjing - has already sent a staff member to the Province to co-ordinate Relief work.

The Scottish Churches' China Group (SCCG), of which the Church of Scotland is a Member, is a long-time partner of The Amity Foundation and will seek to support their disaster relief work.

Through the British and Irish Amity Teachers' Group the SCCG supports a number of English Teachers working in China under the auspices of The Amity Foundation. Scottish Amity teachers working in Gansu and Guangxi Provinces are aware of the devastation but have been unaffected by it.

Colin Renwick remarked: "The latest information from Amity is that there are 20,000 dead and wounded in Beichuan County and over 60,000 missing and an estimated 80% of the buildings destroyed in Wenchuan County, the epicentre of the earthquake."
