BARRA fisherman could be seriously affected by a decision to make Stanton Banks - which is between Barra and Northern Ireland - a draft Special Area of Conservation
Na h-Eileanan an Iar SNP MP Angus MacNeil has raised concerns with Scottish Natural Heritage, fearing that this will have a serious effect for Western Isles' fishermen who have fished 'this rich ground' for generations.
Said Mr MacNeil: "This issue has been flagged up by the Mallaig and North West Fisherman's Association, and could have a detrimental effect on local fishermen. This area is in good condition, and has proved to be a very rich fishing ground."
He went on: "I have now written to SNH asking that they clarify for me what stage this draft order is at, and who was consulted about it locally. We must ensure that no damage is done to the fishing interests under this Habitats Directive."
He added: "This matter is reserved for Westminster unfortunately."
