DEFENCE Minister Quentin Davies is due to visit the Uists on a fact-finding mission next week.
The announcement was welcomed by Donald John MacSween, the Prospective Labour candidate for Westminster, who said that Mr Davies - who is responsible for procurement and support facilities like weapons ranges - had made it clear that he would give due consideration and weight to factors other than the need to make defence savings.

Said Mr MacSween: "Mr Davies confirmed that in addition to the defence budget argument, he would also take into account the social and economic arguments against any such heavy cuts in such a fragile economic environment.

"I am convinced that when the minister has weighed up and given due consideration to all the arguments including the strategic importance of the range, not just in UK terms but also in NATO terms, then the QinetiQ plans have to be abandoned," added Mr MacSween.
