THE rising cost of fuel, coupled with inflation, has prompted Comhairle nan Eilean Siar to raise the fares on local air and bus charges.
A report before the Local Authority's Transportation Committee stated: "Bus and air service operators recently approached the Comhairle requesting increases to contract sums to cover the fuel rise. The existing contracts do not allow for the payment of additional sums to cover such cost increases but the Comhairle sets the maximum fare for both bus and air contracts and could consider increasing these figures thereby enabling the contractors to generate additional income."

Councillors agreed to increase the maximum value on bus and air fares by 10 per cent, and PSO air fares by no more than 10 per cent.

Asked Cllr. Charlie Nicolson: "As a Council, what are we doing in regard to fuel prices? Everyone is being affected by this real problem."

Chair of Transportation, Donald Manford, said that the Comhairle was currently in discussion with HITRANS over the issue of rising fuel costs in the islands.
