Government will support tweed workers
STAFF facing the axe at a Harris Tweed mill have been assured of
government support.
It emerged this week that 36 jobs are to go at the Kenneth Mackenzie
mill in Stornoway.
The issue was raised during First Minister's Questions by Western Isles
MSP Alasdair Allan who said there were 'serious concerns' locally about
the decision to lay off half of the mill`s workers.
Mr Allan added there was 'the threat of consequent additional loss of
work for weavers'.
Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon indicated that finance secretary
John Swinney would be prepared to meet Mr Allan to discuss the issue in
more detail.
"I appreciate very much the anxiety that is caused by the situation,"
she said.
Highlands and Islands Enterprise will be involved in this with the firm
and the local community.
"Workers there, of course, will be supported in the normal way by the
government," the Deputy First Minister added.
The company is owned by businessman Brian Haggas, whose plans to
streamline the industry met with a mixed response when he announced them last year.
He says the cuts are necessary to help the industry survive.
