TESCO has confirmed that an objection has been received to its planning application to extend the Stornoway store purchased from Somerfield.
An objection to the proposals to extend the store by some 664 sq metres has been submitted by a large retailer.
Despite the objection, Tesco anticipates announcing when it expects to open its store in the next few weeks.
The proposals will in
crease the Shell Street store from 23,000 sq ft to 30,193 sq ft.
The additional floorspace will be created by extending in two areas – to the side of the store northwards towards Bell Road (creating a new bulk storage area, improve the internal layout and the sales area].
There is also an extension proposed for the front of the store to create a new entrance lobby – with improved weather protection for customers.
The car park will be renewed with improved lighting, a new layout, trolley storage and recycling facilities.
Commenting on the potential delay for Tesco, Doug Wilson, Corporate Affairs Manager for Tesco, said:
"We have been greatly encouraged by the positive reaction to our proposals to invest in Stornoway and create additional job opportunities.
"It is unfortunate that this objection may hinder the development of the store.
"We are sure that the wider community remains anxious to have the additional choice and competition that Tesco will bring to Stornoway as swiftly as possible.
"Despite this objection, we remain hopeful that the changes to remodel the store, provide additional car parking, expand the recycling facilities and create a better entrance for customers will advance through the planning process as soon as practicable.
"We remain determined to advance with the proposals and announce a date for the store opening very soon."
