Oil spill at Stornoway Harbour
STORNOWAY Port Authority operations crew were called into action to attend an oil spill in the town's Inner Harbour yesterday morning.
Following reports of the oil slick, the Harbour Master instigated a Tier 1 incident response as required by the Port Oil Spill Contingency Plan, in order to effect a clean up.
Fifty litres of oil were recovered once the Disc Skimmer was deployed. The Disc Skimmer is by far the most effective method of recovering waterborne oil.
It would appear the oil was recklessly discharged from the bilges of a vessel some hours earlier, and had not dispersed due to light winds and slow tidal flow.
The Port Authority is further investigating the oil spill through analysis of oil samples and vessel data, with a view to instigating legal proceedings under MARPOL Counter Pollution Regulations.
In support of its aspirations to improve the ongoing marine environment within the Harbour, the Port Authority appeals to all boat owners and crews to dispose of all waste responsibly.
