THE revamped Stornoway Co-op had a hiccup in its unveiling this morning
when customers had to leave the store when one of its fire alarms went off.
Crowds of shoppers eager to check out the £1.5m makeover of the store on Macaulay Road, and new town retailer, Peacocks had queued for an hour to be the first through the doors.
But no sooner were they in, but they had to leave again, when an
over-sensitive sensor in the new coffee shop area set off the building's fire alarm system.
The building was evacuated until the fire brigade arrived on the scene to check out the alarm and ensure the building's safety.
However it was soon business as usual when the fire service gave the ok for shoppers to return and see sample for themselves just what this modern makeover of the store involves, as well as browsing the rails at the fashion-forward and affordable clotheswear retailer, Peacocks, which has taken up residence in the building.
