POLICE have slammed suggestions by a Sunday tabloid that missing Uist man Simon Macmillan may have been targeted due to his family connections.
They described the report as "incorrect and misleading" swiftly insisted that the search for the 21 year-old seaman is still a search for a missing person.

Inspector Steve Black, who has been coordinating the search and enquiries in South Uist over the New Year period, said: "There is no evidence whatsoever to suggest that this is anything other than a missing person enquiry. There has been no evidence of any foul play coming to light during the very thorough police investigation into the circumstances surrounding Simon's disappearance."

The misleading accusations led Simon's father, Mr Angus MacMillan to renew his appeal for information and reiterate his thanks for the support of the community.

He said: "On behalf of the family, I would concur with the Police and Coastguard that at this time this is a missing person enquiry to find Simon. Members of the public who were out on Christmas night into the morning of Boxing Day and who may have seen anything significant with regard to this enquiry are urged to contact the Police.

"The massive support that the thousands of members of the community, and Simon's friends, have shown, bear witness to Simon's good character and popularity."

Police have supported the extensive voluntary search which has involved around 200 people, including Simon MacMillan's family and friends . Inspector Black briefed the search team on Saturday and emphasised the fact that there is nothing to indicate that this is anything other than a missing person enquiry.

Inspector Black added: "A dog search team has been searching the area over the weekend and we will be liaising with the Coastguard over the next couple of days to see if there is anything further which can be done."
