STORNOWAY Golf Club has been refused permission for a Sunday on-sales drinks licence despite dropping their request for off-sales at the Clubhouse.
Members of the Western Isles licencing board voted six votes to four in favour of refusing the application.

A motion was put forward by Cllr Peter Carlin, seconded by Cllr David Blaney for the approval of the application with the removal of the off-sales part.

This was supported by Cllr Uisdean Robertson and Cllr Martin Taylor.

An amendment was put forward by Cllr Norman Macleod for refusal of the application which was seconded by Cllr Iain Mackenzie.

This was supported by Cllr Annie Macdonald, Cllr Catherine Macdonald, Cllr John Mackay, Cllr Murdo Macleod.

Ken Galloway, representing the Golf Club, gave formal notice that in the event of a rejection, they would be raising Section 30 of the Licencing (Scotland) Act.

This section of the act states that a Licensing Board's decision must be based on the statutory grounds for refusal.

There were four objections to the application from the Presbytery of the Free Church (Continuing), the Lord's Day Observance Society (LDOS) and two individual objections.

The Club had an identical application refused earlier this year.
