TESCO has confirmed that a planning application has been submitted to Comhairle nan Eilean Siar to extend the Stornoway store purchased from Somerfield.
The proposals will extend the store by some 664 sq metres. The planning application also includes changes to the store's car parking, the store entrance and vehicular access.

The proposals will increase the Shell Street store from 23,000 sq ft to 30,193 sq ft.

The additional floorspace will be created by extending in two areas - to the side of the store northwards towards Bells Road.

There is also an extension proposed for the front of the store to create a new entrance lobby - with improved weather protection for customers.

The car park will be renewed with improved lighting, a new layout, trolley storage and recycling facilities.

Tesco representatives met with council officials to outline the proposed planning alternations.

They also met with community representatives and Highlands and Islands Enterprise.
