STORNOWAY'S Somerfield store has been sold to Tesco and will change hands on May 12.
A spokesperson for Somerfield confirmed the sale this morning (Thursday).

She said: ""Somerfield has today (Thursday) announced details of its continuing investment and regeneration programme and its plans to open a further 250 stores by 2010.
"Somerfield will also continue to dispose of stores which are not aligned with its overall strategic objectives - to focus on smaller local convenience stores.

"Staff were informed of the decision yesterday and told that their jobs will transfer with the store to the new owners under TUPE (Transfer of Undertakings of Employment) Regulations. The store will transfer to Tesco on or around 12th May.

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the staff for their loyal service. We would also like to thank local customers for their loyalty and ensure them that the store will continue to operate normally up until the transfer date."

Tesco had previously denied its interest in opening a store in the islands.

However Tesco's Corporate Affairs Manager, Doug Wilson said today that 99 jobs would be transferred: "We are delighted to have reached an agreement with Somerfield to give Tesco a presence in the Western Isles for the first time. It will be great news for local people. It means that Tesco will be able to deliver for our new customers in Stornoway with the high quality, value, range and convenience that Tesco has a reputation for."

He added: "We shall be looking forward to working with our new employees in Stornoway to ensure that they benefit from Tesco's market-leading personal development, pay and benefits packages. Tesco now shall be looking at investing in Stornoway to ensure that our new customers can enjoy the very best from Tesco."

Tesco in North Uist? Would Tesco like to confirm or deny that they've bought the old hospital in Lochmaddy for knocking down and building a store? Local rumour suggest its either that or a young offenders institute.

It will be interesting to see if the Tesco prices in Stornoway are going to be the same as those on the mainland. Or will we continue to be ripped-off?

It will also be interesting to see if there is any drop in prices in local shops and services once we have RET. If not, it will make even more sense to shop on the mainland.

I will continue to use the local butcher and fishmonger and the Co-Op. I dislike Tesco and their policy of shutting other businesses to ensure their monopoly and I will not be setting foot through their doors.

Hurrah, your getting a Tesco's what wonderful news, I have lived in Oxford for 13 years and now I am coming home, and I find out your getting a Tesco's so I can keep my Club Card and carry on collecting my points!! Its one of the cheapest stores, with the supermarkets you have up there already, you think they sting you on price, believe me they are just as expensive down here in Oxford. Hopefully at some point you will see the full range of what tesco's offer, entertainment, clothing, petrol etc. Maybe online shopping!! where you can compare prices anyway!! And Tesco Direct (a lttle bit like Argos) maybe they will offer that service too.

#7 Ms Macdonald. From your comment it looks like you work for Tesco & that is the reason you are moving back home...? cheaper petrol will be welocome but these schemes are usually just to lure shoppers away from other shops so I dont think it will be worth there while and they don't really have the space for it at Shell Street.
