STORNOWAY'S Somerfield store has been sold to Tesco and will change hands on May 12.
A spokesperson for Somerfield confirmed the sale this morning (Thursday).
She said: ""Somerfield has today (Thursday) announced details of its continuing investment and regeneration programme and its plans to open a further 250 stores by 2010.
"Somerfield will also continue to dispose of stores which are not aligned with its overall strategic objectives - to focus on smaller local convenience stores.
"Staff were informed of the decision yesterday and told that their jobs will transfer with the store to the new owners under TUPE (Transfer of Undertakings of Employment) Regulations. The store will transfer to Tesco on or around 12th May.
"We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the staff for their loyal service. We would also like to thank local customers for their loyalty and ensure them that the store will continue to operate normally up until the transfer date."
Tesco had previously denied its interest in opening a store in the islands.
However Tesco's Corporate Affairs Manager, Doug Wilson said today that 99 jobs would be transferred: "We are delighted to have reached an agreement with Somerfield to give Tesco a presence in the Western Isles for the first time. It will be great news for local people. It means that Tesco will be able to deliver for our new customers in Stornoway with the high quality, value, range and convenience that Tesco has a reputation for."
He added: "We shall be looking forward to working with our new employees in Stornoway to ensure that they benefit from Tesco's market-leading personal development, pay and benefits packages. Tesco now shall be looking at investing in Stornoway to ensure that our new customers can enjoy the very best from Tesco."
