LESS than a year from going live, the Isle of Berneray community website has recently received successful commended at a national level.
Making its first Internet appearance on Tuesday, May 3 this year, the community run website, www.isleofberneray.com, has received commendation in the 'Community Enhancement through the Internet' category of the Calor Scottish Community of the Year Awards 2005.
Voluntarily developed and maintained by Isle of Berneray residents, with almost one third of the community contributing to its content, the site's objectives are to provide local residents with up to date information, promote the island to tourists, support local businesses and halt population decline.
"We here at the Community Council are very, very pleased to get to the stage where the website is commended and short listed for such an award," revealed Community Council treasurer Fred Macleod, who travelled to the award ceremony in the nation's capital along with Community Council Chair Donald Maclean, and Vice Chair Margaret Patterson.
"John Kirriemuir, who designed the site, also came down with us, and he and his partner Ruth maintain the site and review it regularly to keep it up to date," Fred continued.
"One of the main criteria for the awards was based on its ease of use, and thanks to John and Ruth and the community at large the website which we now have is very user-friendly.
"It's good to see something like this being recognised, especially as it has been such a short time since its inauguration onto the Internet.
"And we always keep our fingers crossed that with a bit more content and some spit and polish, we'll be back next year to pick up an award!" he concluded.
Now in their eighth year, the Calor Scottish Community of the Year Awards encompass every aspect of Scottish life, providing communities with an opportunity to gain recognition and reward for its efforts.
Their aim is to stimulate local people to take responsibility for their communities and enhance them for common good, and representatives of the Western Isles community, which has a population of 127, received the award at a ceremony held at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre last week, and presented by Communities Minister, Malcolm Chisholm MSP.
Dr Douglas Cruickshank, 'Community Enhancement through the Internet' judge and course leader for MSc in e-Business at The Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen explained: "All twelve of this year's finalists have demonstrated exceptional community focus, with a number enjoying active discussion forums and inclusion.
"With a population as small as the Isle of Berneray, the website has become a valuable tool in successfully promoting the area and knowledge sharing between residents."
