ST KILDA is to be digitally surveyed to create a 3D virtual tour online so that visitors from around the globe can witness the beauty and splendour of the World Heritage site without leaving the comfort of their armchair.
Digital designers from Glasgow School of Art have teamed up with Historic Scotland to digitally record all of Scotland's five World Heritage sites. The resulting images will be stored online and meshed together over the web to recreate each location in high resolution 3D.
Work on the project is due to start in 2011 and will involve a combination of aerial and terrestrial scanning. Discussions are still to be held on the level of detail but all cultural material on the island will be documented.
