Uist Radio Ltd (UR) have announced that the Nunton Steadings Trust has gifted their building as studio and administration premises for the soon-to-be-launched Community Radio station.
The news ends a year-long search for a community group interested in taking over the Steadings.
Centrally located near Balivanich on the Isle of Benbecula, Nunton Steadings will allow the ‘An Radio’ studios to be easily reachable by station volunteers from North and South Uist, as well as Benbecula.
UR secured the Steadings by committing to continue the use of the building as a community facility, with plans to re-open the cafe with a new indoor childrens’ play area.
As ‘An Radio’ will be entirely dependent on volunteers apart from a full-time, salaried station manager, UR hopes that parents bringing their children to the play area might pop their heads round the door and help out with the admin or even in front of the microphone!
Mr Neil Campbell of Sustaible Uist was key to negotiating the deal, assisted by UR directors Gus Macaulay and Lesley Buchanan. Neil is a Local Development Officer specially tasked with bringing ‘An Radio’ on air. For the Nunton Steadings Trust Rona MacKay, Màiri Bremner and Peter Carlin participated.
Dr Tony Vernon, Chairman and CTO of UR, commented: “I am very pleased with this outcome. ‘An Radio’ has been searching for a home and studio premises since the start of this year, and I am delighted that we are now able to move on with the next steps towards station launch. ‘An Radio’ is not a single project but at least a dozen, one of which now seems almost complete. My thanks to Lesley, Gus and Neil for their good work.”
