With appointments specifically for kids being made available in Dental Clinics across the length of the Western Isles this summer, there will be opportunities for all youngsters to get their teeth checked and enjoy the annual fun of Childsmile.
A specific week of ‘Childsmile’ is being held in each of the Dental Clinics in the Western Isles during July and August this year, with the first Childsmile Week launching in Western Isles Dental Centre in Stornoway on July 1.
It is never too early for a child to visit the dental practice, and it’s essential that they attend on a regular basis. This important message was promoted during ChildsmileWeek in last year, when hundreds of children attended an appointment; many for the first time.
NHS Western Isles Oral Health Improvement Coordinator, Morag MacKinnon, said: “We had such a successful Childsmile Week last year, with around 500 children attending an appointment, and around 250 attending their first ever dental appointment during the week.
“Registering your baby with a dentist soon after birth, or at least as soon as their first tooth appears, will provide the best possible start for your child in terms of oral health, as well as helping your child get used to the sights, sounds and smells of a dental practice.”
She added: “Good oral health in childhood means healthy gums and teeth in later life, so don’t delay, make your appointment as soon as possible.”
