Western Isles MSP, Alasdair Allan, has today written to Alex Neil MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Infrastructure and Capital Investment, for a clearer picture of when improved broadband services will be brought to the Western Isles.
Dr Allan is particularly seeking assurances that areas like the Western Isles will not be left to the end of the queue when it comes to Next Generation Broadband.
This move follows representations which Alasdair Allan has received from constituents in Uig, amongst other island areas, on this issue.
Alasdair Allan commented:
“There is much talk about the benefits of Next Generation Broadband, but I feel strongly that this must be achieved for all of Scotland, not just Scotland’s cities. Quite rightly, people in the islands want to know that they will not be the last to benefit from this new service.
“The Western Isles would be at a permanent economic disadvantage if it were always ten years behind the rest of Scotland in terms of connectivity.
“I am encouraged by the Scottish Government’s willingness to work with both the UK Government and private sector to find solutions to this issue, but I intend to keep up the pressure. I am happy to hear from any constituents with views on this important issue.”
