An owners’ guided tour of ‘practical’ Newmarket home

Catherine and Bryan Stewart are selling their four bedroomed recently built property in the beautiful setting of Newmarket, Isle of Lewis, writes Jenny Kane.

The property, which hosts a spectacular open plan lounge and garden room, two en-suite bathrooms, a shower room, utility room, garage with remote controlled access and floored loft, and fully fitted kitchen, is full of well thought out designs and fittings.

“If we could lift it up and take it to the mainland with us, we would,” said Bryan. “I would love to take the house with me,” agreed Catherine, “It’s so practical, has lots of storage space and although it’s a new house, the rooms are all a good size.”

The property, which has views of the surrounding countryside as well as the town of Stornoway, is an exceptional example of well thought out design and attention to detail.

“We’ve lived in so many houses so we know how they should function,” explained Catherine. “A lot of practicality is important, particularly wet areas and you can never have enough of them. We’ve got three double sized power showers and two baths.”

“There are not many houses one can say that about,” added Bryan.

This is the fifth house owned by the couple, who have taken inspiration and ideas from their travels, which include nine years living in Australia.

“We’ve gained experience from all over the world. In all modesty, I don’t think anyone could improve the house we have created. What we’ve installed, anyone would love,” said Bryan.

“We’ve always had a big house. The one we built in Australia was an English Tudor inspired house. We even imported two palm trees for the garden and had a waterfall in the swimming pool.

“Over the years you say OK I like that, we must ensure we put that in the next house.”

Catherine, who worked in the White House as a Management Analyst to President Lyndon B. Johnson in the 60s, has picked up a few hints and tips about quality and style: “We love the lounge and garden room, because it’s almost like two in one.”

“It would be great if you’ve got kids, you could keep an eye on them,” said Bryan. “The house is so flexible. It would suit a family or a couple, anyone really.”

“We’re virtually in the country here, but also so close to the town. Five minutes from the ferry, 15 from the airport, and look at the views.”

Catherine explained: “You’ve got the convenience of the town, but also the upsides of living in the country.”

One thing you can’t help but notice as you walk into the house is the light that floods in. One of the changes to the original building plan, made by the couple, was to extend the bay lounge window to make a garden room revealing fantastic views.

“I like the way it opens out as we have a bigger lounge and access to the garden,” explained Catherine.

“It’s extremely airy and very bright in this house,” said Bryan. Everywhere there is light coming through, it’s a feature of the house. The vast majority of rooms are facing south with open aspects.
