Last year the Castlebay Community Council and local Police decided to have a poster competition, open to the school pupils of Castlebay and Eoligarry Community Schools, P1 to P7, to create posters which would relate to Environmental matters and Road Safety.

This was in response to a number of issues highlighted during the tourist season, such as vehicles not pulling into passing places, littering, people leaving gates open as well as other topics addressing Drink Driving, animal welfare and the Outdoors Code.

PC Mike Gallie stated, “This was a great opportunity to continue to work alongside the Castlebay Community Council and the schools. The entrants fully understood what was being asked of them. Judging the winners was not an easy task they were all excellent and I’d wish to pay tribute to the pupils who entered and well done to the winners/runners up. The main prizes were purchased from the Alec Dan Cycle Centre in Stornoway; they consisted of Bike Safety helmets and bike lights. Thank you to Mr Alex Dan and his staff for sponsoring this competition”.
