THE hotly contested Battle of the Bands 2011/2012 kicked off to a roaring start with the first competition showcase held on December 1st last year, writes Eilidh Whiteford.

The musical talent continues next week with the second showcase being held at Pointers Cafe, Stornoway, on Wednesday, February 15th.

And the showcases truly are a product of young people doing it for themselves, as the Battle of the Bands Team, a group of 5th and 6th year pupils from the Nicolson Institute, have been working hard on the Community Education initiative.

Telling of their mission, the Team said: “We aim to increase the number of music-related events within our local communities which encourages young people to get more involved in the local music scene and perform live in a friendly and encouraging environment.”

And that’s exactly what they have done working during free periods to a program devised by Community Education, which explained all aspect of event planning, including marketing, advertising and management of live acts, the BOTB Team spent a gruelling six weeks organising the December showcase under the initiative re-brand – Battle of the Bands: The First Step.
