A TOTAL of 11 construction jobs have gone from local builders Cal Max as the company struggle to hold onto its workforce in the face of tough times.
As previously reported in the Stornoway Gazette, the island construction industry has feared the worst for some time and have felt little to no support from Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.
Now, with the first mass lay off since Cal Max established over 10 years ago, Calum Maclean of the company warns: “This is just the start of it.”
He continues: “If fortunes change and we pick up some more construction work then we can look at rectifying this, but if not, we may have to review things again towards the end of February.”
Mr Maclean detailed that the company are currently working on two projects – Bridge Cottages and the North Harris Trust – but are fearful for the future, and for the islands’ construction industry as a whole.
“It’s hardly surprising that it has come to this,” adds Mr Maclean. “We have warned that this could happen but that just seems to have been quietly ignored.”
