Members of the public looking to support the Scalpay Community Shop Project can now purchase shares in Buth Scalpaigh Limited online.
The community shop which is scheduled to begin trading in March 2012 has already raised over £7,000 via the share option scheme but there is still an opportunity for the public to lend their support to the venture.
Interim secretary of Buth Scalpaigh Limited, Morag Macleod said: “The local response to the share-option scheme has been very encouraging indeed. We’ve held a number of open surgeries in the shop itself which have been very well attended and we’re delighted with the response so far.”
Membership of the cooperative requires a minimum investment of 1 X £25 share on a strict ‘one member one vote’ basis meaning that the purchase of multiple shares is welcomed, but each member has the right to one vote only, irrespective of the amount of shares held.
HDL Development Officer, Coinneach Morrison said of the new online purchasing facility: “There are a great number of people living on the mainland who have a strong connection to Scalpay and we are keen to extend the opportunity to support this venture to anyone with a community interest in the Island.”
Upon completion of the share option scheme, Buth Scalpaigh’s interim committee shall be dissolved and a new committee will be formed at a formal meeting of cooperative members. The interim board of directors who are spearheading this project would again like to extend their thanks to Harris Development Limited, Highland and Islands Enterprise, Leader, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and Business Gateway for all their support and without whom a Community Shop on Scalpay would not be possible.
