Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has two ‘Youth Champions’, Cllr Charlie Nicolson covering Lewis and Harris and Cllr Donnie Steele in Uist and Barra.
The ‘Champions’, aim to liaise with young people throughout the Islands and give them a voice. The appointments followed an election process amongst youth councils and build on the Comhairle’s aim of supporting the development of youth engagement in the Western Isles.
Cllr Charlie Nicolson said: “I am delighted to be a ‘Youth Champion’ as I think it is so important that our young people play a role in shaping our communities and having a say. Much good work has been done by Councillors in their local communities working with and listening to young people. I hope we can continue to build on that. I think one of the roles of the Youth Champions is to make sure that our young people are heard at a national level and I am committed to encouraging national organisations to come to the Islands to work with young people here.”
Cllr Donnie Steele said: “Young people have much to offer their communities. In the islands young people play an amazing role in sport, the arts, charity fund raising, caring and much, much more. It is important that their contribution is recognised and that opportunities are provided for young people which enable them to fulfill their potential.”
