Comhairle to ask Scottish Government to consider funding South Ford works

A case is to be made to the Scottish Government for funding to create an opening on the South Ford causeway.

At a meeting of the full Comhairle tonight (Wednesday), Uist councillors Donnie Steele and Ronnie Mackinnon put forward an amendment to the recommendation of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee to further investigate funding for major engineering works on the causeway which connects Benbecula and South Uist.

Last week councillors approved a recommendation to look at less costly measures to deal with the risk of coastal flooding and agreed that an option to create a bridge opening, which is estimated to cost £20 million, not be taken forward as it was unlikely to attract funding support.

The amendment asked that they approach the Scottish Government on the plan for the South Ford as an ‘exceptional case’.

It also called for the Comhairle to engage with Storas Uibhist and the local community before the deadline for funding support on May 4th.

Councillors agreed to this course of action.
