Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is to investigate the decision to exclude commercial vehicles over 5m from eligibility for the Road Equivalent Tariff(RET) scheme.
The Transport Strategy Member Officer Working Group will also look at the likely impact this will have on business.
Cllr Donald Manford, Chair of Transportation, said: “This will be of significant detriment to businesses in the islands and I think it is important that we have the fullest information possible on how the recommendations were arrived at. We can then use that information to support the work of the MP and others on highlighting the impacts and consequences”.
Cllr Angus Campbell , Leader of the Comhairle said: The permanent establishment of RET on the main ferry routes was a very welcome development but I know the exclusion of commercial vehicles has been a matter of concern in the haulage industry and amongst others. We need to know the reasons behind this decision and the likely impact and that will inform our future lobbying of Government. It is important we do all we can to reduce the effect of high transport costs on ordinary families living costs.”
