A group of young folk from Connemara will be descending on Ness at the end of July to take part in workshops and to learn about island culture. The Ness Connemara link goes back to 1999 when a large group of Nisich went over to the Emerald Isle on an exchange which saw the birth of Cèilidh san Iar Thuath and indeed Taigh Dhonnchaidh in the year 2000. This led to a couple more trips over the years with the Ness Melodeon Band, Mairi Smith & Alasdair Campbell performing at the prestigious Fèile Phlearaca in Connemara itself and on Inis Mòr in the Aran Isles.
The week which takes place between the 25th and 29th of July is being organised by Plearaca Teo and Taigh Dhonnchaidh with support from Jenna Cumming at Fèisean nan Gaidheal, Comunn na Gàidhlig and Comunn Eachdraidh Nis and will see the young group participating in Gaelic singing, dancing, piping and poetry workshops. They will also get the opportunity to learn about island traditions but in particular about the community of Ness, where they will be based for the week. Festival organiser, Meta Ui Mhaille who has been to Ness before will be accompanying the group along with some tutors who will also be conducting workshops for young people from Ness and further afield interested in getting a wee taster of Irish culture. It is going to be a jam packed week with a lot of evening activities, cèilidhs and a BBQ. Mary Duff, Taigh Dhonnchaidh committee member said “an invitation is extended to the community of Ness to attend these events and a programme will be released closer to the time. It would be good to see young and old coming out to welcome our friends from Connemara, so pencil the dates into your diaries and be prepared for lots of music, craic and of dancing!”
The workshops are open to young people aged 12-14 (Limited availability) If you are interested in taking part or know somebody who is, contact Mary Duff on 07774084119 or e-mail her at email@example.com
